PARKSVILLE — A motorist swerved and clipped a man running on the Inland Island Hwy. in Parksville late Tuesday evening.

Oceanside RCMP Sgt. Shane Worth said their detachment received reports the man on Hwy. 19 moving in a northbound direction near exit 51.

Moments later, he said at about 9:15 p.m. a motorist hit the pedestrian.

“It’s not known why the man was in the travel portion of the highway, however alcohol may have been a contributing factor on his part,” Worth told NanaimoNewsNOW.

The injured man was flown from the scene to hospital, with Worth noting the man had a leg injury, but was conscious, breathing and talking on scene to emergency responders.

“He was in dark clothing in an area that was not illuminated,” Worth said.

Charges are not expected against the driver, who remained on scene and cooperated with police, Worth said.

He said on-scene dashcam footage showed the driver tried to avoid the pedestrian just before impact.

Worth said the incident didn’t cause any significant traffic disruptions.
