The Huu-ay-aht First Nation asked for political support in their efforts to stop the destaffing of west coast lighthouses.
Two months ago DFO announced the planned automation of the Pacheena and Carmannah Point light stations.
Huu-ay-aht Chief Councillor John Jack said lighthouse personnel have saved many lives along the rugged west coast.
“There’s quite a swell of people who are opposed to the de-staffing of the lighthouses,” he said. “Some of our citizens have been saved by the lighthouse keepers noticing that they were capsized when they hit a deadhead. It’s very important to have safety personnel who are trained like they are.”
The Alberni Clayoquot Regional District Board agreed to send an emergency resolution to the upcoming Union of BC Municipalities meeting, demanding the Federal Goverment put an immediate stop to destaffing west coast lighthouses until they consult with affected communities.
Regional District Directors also suggested the resolution be made at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference next Spring.
