Hawaii Mars leaves Sunday

Details of Hawaii Mars final flight were released yesterday by the BC Aviation Museum.

The iconic waterbomber will lift off from Sproat Lake on Sunday, fly over Port Alberni on its way to the east coast of the island, where it might pass over several forest communities to commemorate the original establishment of the unique Martin Mars forest fire fighting program in the early 1960s.

According to the BC Aviation website, this “once in a lifetime event” will be like seeing the space shuttle launch, as the Hawaii Mars will arrive at Patricia Bay flanked by all nine planes of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds.

The world’s largest flying boat will be brought back on land and trailered to the BC Aviation Museum, with a grand opening of their crown jewel exhibit scheduled for September 28th.
