NANAIMO — A man police say busted into a south Nanaimo home late last year and allegedly attacked the homeowner with a bat is unaccounted for.

Calvin Anthony Michael failed to show up for a court appearance in Nanaimo on Wednesday, July 30 for an arraignment hearing to answer to 10 charges in relation to three sets of offences, court records showed.

Bench warrants linked to all of the charges or his arrest were issued, allowing police the ability to detain Michael until he re-appears in court.

Michael was originally arrested following a Dec. 1 home invasion on Roberta Rd. East in Nanaimo’s Chase River neighbourhood.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, Michael allegedly burst into the home at 3 a.m. through a kitchen window.

The homeowner intervened, allegedly receiving strikes from an aluminum bat by Michael, who was 20-years-old at the time.

Police stated the homeowner managed to disarm the assailant and use the bat against him in self-defence “to protect himself and his family and his home.”

Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. reported at the time that the homeowner held the suspect in his carport until police showed up and arrested the suspect.

It doesn’t appear the suspect and people in the home were known to each other, O’Brien noted.

Michael was charged with five offences for the Chase River home invasion, including break and enter with intent to commit an offence and assault with a weapon.

What happened next?

Online court records showed Michael remained jailed until he was released on bail on Jan. 17.

He was then re-arrested and later charged with theft under $5,000 for an alleged incident on March 11 in Nanaimo.

Court records showed Michael was granted bail a second time in Nanaimo on June 11 by judge Brian Harvey, only to allegedly breach his release conditions the following day in Cumberland.

None of the allegations in this article against Calvin Anthony Michael have been proven in court.

Michael has a substantial record for a youthful offender with multiple convictions for crimes of violence and property crimes in Nanaimo dating back to 2021.
