Several Nanaimo bus shelters shattered

NANAIMO — Local police are trying to solve multiple senseless cases of vandalism involving eight glass-enclosed bus shelters shattered overnight.

Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said the damage was reported to shelters extending from Nanaimo’s downtown area northward to the Country Club Centre and Nanaimo North Town Centre areas.

He called this level of vandalism unusual.

“One or two bus shelters are destroyed at least once a month, but never so many at a given time. We’re investigating, we’re looking to see if there’s any CCTV footage,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

He said police believe the damage to the tempered glass was done by a baseball bat or some other similar type of blunt object.

It’s unclear if the mischief was the work of an individual or group of people, but O’Brien said it’s believed a vehicle was involved.

Whoever was involved likely moved in a pattern, O’Brien said, either from south to north, or north to south.

“Somebody would have seen something, it caused a significant amount of noise, a tremendous amount of damage. We’re hoping the public can help us on this one and move it forward.”
