NANAIMO — With a vital inventory of toys for young patients dwindling at Nanaimo hospital, a push is on to stock up to fulfill year-round demand.

Members of the NRGH Pediatric Unit, backed by certified child life specialist Sandra Hirota, joined forces to collect toys on Monday, July 22 and Tuesday, July 23 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the hospital’s main lobby off Dufferin Cres.

“We’re looking for toys new and in their original packaging for babies all the way up to 17-years-old,” Hirota told NanaimoNewsNOW.

She requested donors to not bring stuffed animals.

Hirota said accepting donations for this cause was added for a summer intake to meet demand for inpatients of the the nine-bed unit, as well as for their young patients coming in for other reasons such as surgeries, doctor appointments and blood work.

Smaller to medium sized toys would be ideal, since larger items tend to be challenging to store at the hospital, Hirota noted.

Items like gift cards to local restaurants and retailers are also a great fit to benefit children and their families, Hirota said.

She hopes the community will help with generous donations to make occasions like end of treatment, birthdays and Christmas a little more special for their brave young patients.

“It makes a big difference for kids and their families who are already dealing with a lot. It may seem like a small gesture, but it has a significant impact.”

A special visitor will be in attendance at NRGH as part of the Christmas in July.

Hirota said Santa Claus himself will be on hand in the hospital lobby on Monday and Tuesday between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

“He’s making a special trip from the North Pole, but because of all this sunshine don’t expect him to be outfitted in his full attire,” Hirota chuckled.
