NANAIMO — More multi-family homes are coming to the Newcastle neighbourhood following the approval of a development permit for a four-storey, 47-unit residential apartment building.

The development permit for 307, 311, and 315 Holly Ave. off Rosehill St. north of Caledonia Park was approved by Council on Monday, May 27, which included changes proposed by the design advisory panel.

The building will consist mainly of one-bedroom apartments but also include nine two-bedroom apartments, three studio and three-bedroom units, as well as six adaptable units.

Onsite vehicle parking will include two underground levels with 67 vehicle spaces and 31 long-term bicycle storage spaces in two secure rooms.

Short-term bicycle parking and three visitor vehicle spaces will also be available.

The developers also revised part of their plans based on the recommendations from the Design Advisory Panel, including added weather protection for the short-term bike racks, adjusting the types of vegetation, and considering new exterior material to reduce heat exposure on the south and west elevation.

The three lots currently contain three homes and a number of trees, which will be demolished to make way for the development.

The Holly Ave. development permit was approved unanimously by Council without comment.

The future Holly Ave. development adds to additional development plans for the area, including two recently demolished homes at 529 and 515 Terminal Ave. being consolidated into a single lot. (Jordan Davidson/NanaimoNewsNOW)
