The recent building boom is helping City Council carve more off this year’s proposed tax increase.
$535,000 in new taxation this year from new buildings has helped lower the increase to 9.16% according to Mayor Sharie Minions.
“When new taxes come into the community because a new house is built or a new addition is built on a mill or a new apartment building is built, we are using those taxes to bring down the taxes to the average residential home,” she said.
The proposed increase means an additional $212 to the average single family home tax bill.
“It’s an improvement from where we started and I think we all recognize that it is still significantly higher than what we would like to see for a tax increase,” she said. “While we have brought it down from the nearly 17% that it started at, it’s still a difficult number to be putting forward.”
Meanwhile, business, light industrial and heavy industry taxes could increase by 11.6%
Last year’s surplus still needs to be finalized and applied to this year’s taxes, and while the Mayor is expecting a surplus, she said she’s not expecting to be that much.
