People “devastated” by grave side logging

The owner of the Alberni Valley Memorial Gardens is upset after Mosaic Forestry logged to the edge of the cemetary, despite promising a 40-foot buffer.

Barry Tuck says the serenity of the cemetary has been destroyed.

“It’s horrendous. It’s right up to the border but they should never have been that close. It’s like a warzone feeling unfortunately and that’s not the backdrop that was there and if they wanted to be a community partner and so many ways that they promote themselves as there should’ve been a work with. It just felt like you were let down,” he said.

Tuck said Mosaic initially promised to replant along the cemetary border, but he hasn’t heard from them in more than a month.

He said he’s heard from the families of those whose loved ones are buried there, and they are devastated.

“I’ve heard that ‘I went to my parents and brothers grave site the other day and saw the terrible mess the loggers have done beside the cemetery. I was just devastated when I saw that. Gone is the peaceful serene resting place'”.

Tuck said Mosaic initially promised to replant along the cemetary border, but he hasn’t heard from them in more than a month.

Mosaic claims they advised the city and ACRD of their plans but Port Alberni Mayor Sharie Minions and Cherry Creek area director Mike Sparrow said they did not.

Ten years ago Mosaic, then Island Timberlands, planned to log the top of the hump to roadside, until a PEAK News investigation stopped it.
