Find free and fun Family Day events happening across the mid-Island

NANAIMO — There are plenty of fun, free, and family-friendly activities taking place this Family Day long weekend locally and across the province.

The City of Nanaimo is hosting several free events on Monday, Feb. 19, all across the Harbour City.

The Oliver Woods Community Centre (6000 Oliver Rd.) will have bouncy castles, food trucks, a scavenger hunt, hockey, basketball, and more, taking place from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The Frank Crane Arena (2300 Bowen Rd.) will be open at 11:30 a.m. for a ‘Stick ‘n’ Puck’ game, followed by an open skate for everyone from 1:15-3:15 p.m., while the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre will be open from noon until 5 p.m. for anyone who wants to swim.

The Nanaimo Art Gallery (150 Commercial St.) is working together with the Nanaimo African Heritage Society to present free hands-on activities, led by a Vancouver Island-based artist.

Outside Nanaimo
Both the Ravensong Aquatic Centre (737 Jones St., Qualicum Beach) and Oceanside Place Arena (830 W. Island Hwy W., Parksville) will have free skating and swimming on Feb. 19.

The Qualicum Beach Museum (587 Beach Rd.) will be offering an afternoon of fish-related fun on Feb. 19 starting at 1:00 p.m., hosted by the volunteer group, Qualicum Beach Streamkeepers.

In Ladysmith, the Frank Jameson Community Centre (810 6 Ave.) will host free family swims all afternoon, as well as gym activities and art kits.

Across B.C., the provincial government is providing $250,000 in grant money to keep events free from Feb. 16-19.
