Firefighters respond to flooding alarms

Port Alberni fire crews have been called out multiple times during the past few days to commercial alarms.

Deputy Fire Chief Travis Cross the cold temperatures have caused some underground sprinkler systems to burst.

“They freeze and then it cracks and then when it thaws out it triggers an alarm,” he said “Underground parking lots will have dry systems but then they’ll go wet when an alarm is triggered, so if that’s not maintained properly and they have water leaking into that dry system then that’s what they experience that issue.”

Cross says it important to maintain commercial systems and wrap any exposed pipes.
