PARKSVILLE — The City of Parksville recently paid tribute to a few of the longest-serving members of their volunteer fire department.

During their Nov. 20 meeting, Parksville Council recognized three volunteer on-call firefighters for their many years of dedication to the Canadian Fire Service and Parksville Volunteer Fire Department. (PVFD)

Cpt. Eric Miller was the recipient of two awards, the Federal Fire Service Exemplary Service Medal First Bar, which represents 30 years of service, and the Thirty-year Municipal Volunteer Medal from the Canadian Volunteer Fire Service Association, presented only to members whose entire service is volunteer.

Miller, who’s been with the PVFD since 2000, started his career in Whitehorse in 1991 and served at the BX Swan Lake Fire Department near Vernon from 1994-2000.

Lt. Joe Foster received the Federal Fire Service Exemplary Service Medal, Second Bar for his 40 years of service.

Foster joined PVFD in 2020 after spending the first 38 years of his career with the City of Vancouver.

Senior firefighter David Hildebrand was given the Twenty-year Federal Fire Service Exemplary Service Medal for serving in the Canadian Fire Service and at Parksville Fire Rescue for the last two decades.

“On behalf of Parksville Fire Rescue, my congratulations to Captain Miller, Lieutenant Foster and Senior Firefighter Hildebrand who have reached impressive milestones,” said fire chief Marc Norris. “These members provide dedicated service to our department and the citizens of, and visitors to, the Parksville Fire Protection Area.”
