NANAIMO — BC Ferries are hoping to transform some of their major terminals to streamline the check-in and boarding process.

In an application sent to the British Columbia Ferries Commissioner, BC Ferries is proposing a multi-million dollar construction project to improve five of their most used terminals.

Affected terminals are Departure Bay and Duke Point in Nanaimo, along with Horseshoe Bay, Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay.

According to a release, BC Ferries said this application will help reduce ticketing and check-in wait times, provide a contactless journey for foot passengers and also include an express lane check-in at terminals for pre-paid reserved customers travelling in vehicles.

If approved, the changes will be implemented over a four-year period with foot traffic adjustments at Tsawwassen and vehicle express lanes at Duke Point operational by the fall of 2024.

The remaining terminals will be completed by the fall of 2027.

The application is posted here on the Commissioner’s website for public feedback until July 5.

In 2022, over 16.5 million passengers and 6.8 million vehicles utilized BC Ferry services.
