NANAIMO —A man was pronounced dead on scene after the truck he was driving went off-road and hit a tree in the rural Extension area south of Nanaimo.

The crash was reported on Tuesday, June 6 at about 8:15 p.m. involving a single occupant truck on White Rapids Rd. near Godfrey Rd.

“We spoke to two witnesses who indicated that the vehicle involved was a black GM pickup was seen traveling at excessive speeds prior to the crash,” Nanaimo Res. RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said.

The name of the 33-year-old Nanaimo resident has not been publicly released, while his family was notified, O’Brien said.

“While it’s only preliminary, we believe that speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the collision.”

Police hope other witnesses will come forward to police to piece together the truck’s movements prior to the crash.

A BC Hydro line was impacted as a result of the crash, leading to a section of road near the scene being closed for a period of time to ensure the safety of first responders, O’Brien noted.

Crews from the Extension Volunteer Fire Dept., BC Ambulance Service and BC Coroners Service also attended.
