NANAIMO — Local Mounties are praising an astute neighbour for not only preventing the theft of a boat trailer, but also officers laying a weapons charge.

Police were called to the 600 block of Georgia Ave. just after 6:30 a.m. on Monday, May 22 after a neighbour saw two people carrying a boat trailer down a nearby alleyway.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said in a release the neighbour called police, believing something was up.

“The situation didn’t sit right with him so he reported the incident to the police who were on scene within minutes. After a brief struggle, the two suspects were arrested for the theft.”

A subsequent search of a backpack carried by a 36-year-old man turned up several loaded .22 calibre rifles and ammunition. Also found and confiscated was a small amount of what’s believed to be crack cocaine

Daniel Nicholas Kipp was arrested by police and remains in custody facing a charge of carrying a prohibited weapon.

His next court appearance was scheduled for May 25.

Kipp’s criminal record dates back to the mid-2000s and includes charges of assault, drug possession, mischief and numerous weapons charges.

The second person involved was released by police.
