Mid Island transitions to stage 2 watering restrictions

NANAIMO — As the weather warms, municipalities are adjusting accordingly with seasonal watering restrictions.

Stage 2 restrictions come into effect for all Regional District of Nanaimo Water Service Areas, with the exception of Decourcey Island, which will remain with stage 4 restrictions.

Private wells are not subject to municipal watering restrictions.

Stage 2 means residents can only water their lawns on even days for even-numbered houses, and on odd days for odd-numbered houses for a maximum of two hours a day.

Sprinkling is only permitted between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., with vegetable gardens and fruit trees exempt from all watering restrictions.

Watering of other ornamental shrubs, flowers, and trees are restricted to a hand-held container or hose equipped with a shut-off novel during permitted watering times.

Washing of boats, vehicles and the exterior of buildings follows similar rules; hand-held containers or a hose equipped with a shut-off nozzle will still be permitted.

The washing of sidewalks and driveways is still permitted, as well as the filling of swimming pools, wading pools, hot tubs, and other water features.

The 2022/2023 winter season had dry conditions for much of the mid-Island caused by lower-than-average precipitation.

According to a release from the RDN, weather forecasters are predicting higher-than-average rainfall and average temperatures for the spring. Still, it’s likely the drought conditions caused over the winter months due to the low precipitation will persist.

“Provincial drought levels for eastern Vancouver Island have remained at drought level 3 throughout the winter, with several stream systems such as the Englishman and Little Qualicum currently seeing lower than normal flows.” the RDN release stated.
