NANAIMO — A shelter-in-place order applies to several properties on Vanderneuk Rd. near Rutherford Rd. due to a despondent individual, police said.

Emergency crews received the call on Thursday, April 13 around 8:20 a.m. to a home, leading to a significant police response.

Nanaimo RCMP Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said it’s an ongoing situation.

“We have a number of police officers on scene, including the Emergency Response Team who are currently negotiating with that individual. We’ve asked the neighbours in the shelter-in-place until such time the situation is resolved. If there is any update we will let the public know via social media and the local media.”

O’Brien said they are stopping all vehicle and foot traffic within a one to two-block radius of the home on Vandernuk Rd.

Detours are in place via the nearby Linley Valley subdivision for impacted residents living outside the containment zone.

O’Brien thanked neighbours who helped spread the word early on in the situation.

“We’re lucky to have a very proactive block watch who got the word out to the neighbours and they’re following the orders by the police officers on scene to please shelter in place.”

Nanaimo Fire Rescue crews and paramedics are also on scene.

This is an ongoing situation, and we will provide updates when they become available.
