‘It’s such a great experience:’ women’s volleyball nationals open at VIU in Nanaimo

NANAIMO — The VIU Mariners women’s volleyball team begin their “drive for five” on home court.

They’re one of eight elite teams from as far away as Charlottetown and as close as Victoria who have come to Nanaimo the 2023 CCAA Women’s National Volleyball Championships.

VIU athletic director Danielle Hyde said a strong organizing committee has put in a lot of work to make the week unforgettable for the athletes.

“I can remember every national championship I attended as a player. It’s such a great experience and not everybody gets to do it. While the games and winning the medals are why they’re here…we’ve tried to put some little touches on it that are unique to the Island and unique to Nanaimo.”

A welcome dinner and awards ceremony took place Tuesday, March 7 with teams hitting the court beginning Wednesday, March 8.

Multiple games per day at the VIU gym will continue through Saturday, March 11 with the gold medal game going at 6 p.m.

The Mariners slated to take the court at 6 p.m. on Wednesday against Humber College.

Anytime the Mariners play the VIU gym is expected to be full but Hyde said the organizers want to build a supportive atmosphere no matter who is playing.

“I can say on the first day for the game at 1 p.m. we’ve got some of the local elementary schools going to march over to show their support for the other teams. We’re really trying to engage the local youth volleyball community, the schools and any other groups that have supported us throughout the year.”

Hosting a major event is always special, and the Mariners just put on the CCAA women’s basketball nationals in 2022, but this championship is more special because there’s a piece of history on the line.

If the VIU wins the tournament the institution will capture their CCAA record fifth consecutive women’s volleyball national championship.

Hyde said the storyline has been their since the team won their fourth straight title last year and then were successful in securing the bid to host.

“It definitely adds a layer of pressure and what we’re trying to do is help them relax and just enjoy the experience and let the week unfold.”

Tickets for the CCAA nationals are available online or at the door for each match.
