NANAIMO — A woman remains in hospital in serious condition after a late-night motor vehicle incident.

First responders were called to the Mostar Rd./Rutherford Rd. and the Old Island Hwy. intersection around 10:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28 after a person crossing towards Nanaimo North Town Centre was hit by a southbound car.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said the vehicle, driven by an adult woman, was in the slow lane of the highway.

“The pedestrian was seriously injured and taken to hospital for medical treatment, the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. We’ve ruled out drugs and alcohol on behalf of the driver.”

O’Brien noted the pedestrian was wearing dark, non-reflective clothing at the time of the incident.

Circumstances of the crash are unclear as investigators have been unable to speak with the victim. No other witnesses have come forward to date, with police seeking anybody who might have further information.

Those with details are asked to contact the Nanaimo detachment at 250 754 2345, quoting file number 2023-6868.

“We’re hoping someone who may have been driving by or who had pre-collision activity with either the pedestrian or the driver…please contact us,” O’Brien said.

Both lanes of the highway were closed for several hours as officers conducted an initial investigation.

An RCMP Collision Analyst attended the scene.

The vehicle, a grey older model Volkswagen Jetta, sustained significant front end damage as a result and was towed away.

RCMP will conduct a mechanical inspection to determine whether any vehicle fault played a role.
