NANAIMO — Police are looking for additional witnesses who haven’t already come forward following a fatal Sunday evening stabbing.

An unidentified man was stabbed in the parking lot of Port Place Shopping Centre outside the main entrance near London Drugs on Sunday, Jan. 22 just after 7 p.m. The victim then went inside the mall where bystanders administered First Aid, but he later died in hospital from his injuries.

Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said police are actively canvassing area businesses to determine if any useful surveillance video exists.

He said officers have been redeployed from other high priority criminal investigations.

“Resources have to be drawn from those for a short period of time to focus our attention on this. The first part of any investigation is significant so we can get somebody charged and get them before the courts.”

O’Brien stated their investigators are working “around the clock” on the incident.

A suspect was arrested the evening of the stabbing and remains in custody, however charges have not been laid against him.

Police are calling on people with video footage of the area on Sunday evening between 6:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. to come forward.

“See if you have an camera (footage) of people walking in the parking lot, you have what appears to be in interaction or an altercation or something. Please don’t decide for yourself, send it to our Nanaimo Serious Crime Unit and let them look at it.”

O’Brien again confirmed to NanaimoNewsNOW the victim was not a security guard, as speculated on various social media groups, however specifics on both the suspect and victim are yet to be made public.

If you have information that can assist with the investigation, please call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file # 2023-2530.

O’Brien added multiple Good Samaritans attempted to save the stabbing victim’s life inside the mall may be traumatized from what they saw and require support.

“They don’t have to suffer alone, please reach out to our RCMP Victim Services.”
