NANAIMO — A single-vehicle crash in Cedar trapped an injured passenger, who was rescued by local firefighters.

The wreck happened on Thursday, Oct. 27 at about 12 p.m. on Harmac Rd. near the MacMillan Rd. overpass.

The uninjured driver told NanaimoNewsNOW he lost control of his truck while turning left off MacMillan Rd. He said his truck flipped and rolled once before landing right side up.

North Cedar Volunteer Fire Dept. chief Percy Tipping said on scene the truck went down an approximate 25 foot embankment.

He said both occupants are fortunate.

“Our crews accessed the vehicle, extracted the patient then brought him up the bank using ropes and then handed him off to the BC Ambulance Service,” Tipping said on scene.

He said the injured man was fully conscious and aware as he was transported to hospital.

An air ambulance requested to attend the scene but was eventually stood down.

The badly damaged truck missed a wooden power pole by about 20 feet as it barreled down the drop-off.

Nanaimo RCMP responded to the scene and are investigating.

Traffic disruptions were minimal.
