Increased flows on Nanaimo River to help spawning salmon

NANAIMO — Flows will be swifter than usual on Nanaimo River for the next few days.

The city of Nanaimo advised river users of increased in-stream flows due to water being released from the Fourth lake and Jump Lake reservoirs.

increased flows will settle down by the weekend, the City noted.

“Caution around increased water levels is advised for residents adjacent to the river and in-stream users such as boaters or fishers. The pulse release will be noticeable starting Wednesday, October 5.”

The multi-partner effort to flush cool, fresh water down stream is done to encourage waiting Chinook salmon in the Nanaimo River Estuary to come upstream to spawn.

“Through careful management of the reservoirs, there is sufficient reserves available to be able to facilitate the pulse release, despite this year’s late-season drought,” the release stated.

Nanaimo River Hatchery staff regularly swim the river to track fish populations and determine when salmon are ready to migrate up the river, the City stated.
