Pedestrian in wheelchair seriously injured after hit by truck in south Nanaimo

NANAIMO — A pickup truck hit a man in his early 60’s sending him to hospital via air ambulance.

Nanaimo RCMP say it happened on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at about 8 p.m. on Fifth St. at Railway Ave. when an eastbound truck hit the man in a wheelchair.

Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said the injured man was attempting to cross Fifth St at the time.

There is not a crosswalk at the intersection, while one is placed nearby to the east.

“The individual was seriously injured, he was later transported to a hospital in Vancouver, his condition is considered stable,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

The driver and passenger of a Ford Ranger remained on scene and cooperated with investigators, O’Brien noted.

“Based on what we know at this point alcohol and drugs are ruled out, excessive speed has been ruled out as well.”

He said it was dark when the incident occurred and the road was dry.

The area is a vulnerability for pedestrians with a crest in the road just prior to the intersection for eastbound traffic.

The truck was impounded and will undergo a mechanical inspection.

Orange RCMP paint markings and droplets of blood are visible at the scene.
