‘The event has been passed down through generations:’ Ocean Mile Swim provides all-ages challenge

QUALICUM BEACH — It’s a unique test of fitness but all done in the name of fun.

The Ocean Mile Swim, put on by the Town of Qualicum Beach and Regional District of Nanaimo will again hit Oceanside waters on Sunday, Aug. 21 beginning around 3 p.m. The race starts and finishes at the boat ramp near Shore Restaurant on Hwy. 19A.

Heather Svensen, Town deputy CAO, told NanaimoNewsNOW the event involves a half-mile swim south from the boat ramp towards Parksville before returning to complete the one mile course. It’s been a staple of the community for more than 60 years.

“There’s definite regulars who come year after year, they like to train for it and it’s sort of a family event for some people that have done it. The event has been passed down through generations.”

Registration opens the day of the event at 1 p.m. with just over 50 swimmers braving waters during the 2019 event.

Swimmers are divided into different groups, but all start together. Trophies are on offer for the youngest or oldest competitor, or the winner of 15 different categories.

Svensen said a new award is on offer this year, awarded to the first senior woman to cross the finish line.

“A group of local women asked if they could sponsor that…and it will be in honour of Elizabeth Hieronymi. She has been an outstanding contributor to recreation in the town for many years, over two decades actually.”

Support on the water is being provided by Oceanside RCMP, the Canadian Coast Guard while a local stand up paddle board business are donating some rental boards to provide swimmers extra support on the water.
