Nanaimo lotto winner in disbelief after becoming instant millionaire

Aug 16, 2022 | 10:13 AM

NANAIMO — After the shock wore off of winning $1 million, a Nanaimo man evaluated how the jackpot would change he and his family’s life.

Richard Aubertin won the Lotto Max Maxmillions prize during the Aug. 2 draw after he bought his ticket at 49th Parallel Grocery on Cedar Rd.

“I used the self-scanner at the counter, and the rest is history. There was lots of excitement from others in the store too,” Aubertin told the BC Lottery Corporation.

His wife thought he was having a heart attack.

“She asked if I was okay because I kept saying ‘oh my god’ over and over.”

Aubertin is looking to upgrading their home, traveling and retiring earlier than expected.

He is the fourth Nanaimo resident to win a lottery prize of at least $500,000 this year.

The Harbour City has seen more than its fair share of lotto luck with 24 people winning at least half a million dollars in the past decade.

On July 23 Nanaimo’s James Honeyman cashed in with $1 million in a Lotto 6/49 draw.
