NANAIMO — Local police are looking to the public to identify a masked man who they say held up a convenience store with a knife.

According to police, the man entered the James Street General Store on Victoria Rd., at the intersection with View Rd. and Needham St. just before 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said the man came up to the worker behind the till, threatened them with a knife and demanded cash.

“The clerk complied with the demand and then watched as the suspect headed northbound on Needham St. We were on scene within minutes including our police dog services and we were unable to locate the individual, which probably tells us he either had a car or a bike or some kind of means to leave the area.”

O’Brien would not say how much money the man got away with.

The worker was not injured and called 911 as soon as the man left.

“The clerk was shaken by the ordeal, obviously, and our Victim Services are doing what they do best and are assisting that person.”

Investigators describe the man as having a dark complexion, standing 5’10” tall with a slim build. He was wearing a dark hoodie and wore a cloth mask over his face and gloves on his hands.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250 754 2345, quoting file number 2022-26969.
