NANAIMO — A couple visiting the city over the weekend were attacked while walking in the downtown.

A husband and wife from the Lower Mainland were walking along Cliff St., near Campbell St. around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 10. The pair were competitors at the weekend Dragon Boat Festival being held at Maffeo Sutton Park.

They were walking along the roadway when a car pulled up beside them and the driver was irate and yelling at them for walking on the road,” Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW. “Without any forewarning, the driver swore at them then produced a can of bear spray.

The area of Cliff St. where the couple were assaulted does not contain a sidewalk.

O’Brien said the husband bore the brunt of the spray, being hit on the left side of his face and body while his wife was hit by ricocheting spray off her husband.

The car, which was described as a small grey sedan, sped off and was last seen driving up the hill on Campbell St.

O’Brien said the couple was able to get a license plate number and vehicle description, with investigators following up.

“The registered owner has been contacted, he said he was out of town for the weekend and the car was left at a friend’s place.”

Bear spray is not illegal to carry by adults, however use in this manner is very serious.

“You’ve got to be 18 years of age to possess it and if you use it inappropriately, you can be charged with assault with a weapon,” O’Brien said.

An investigation into the incident continues with anyone in the area around the time asked to contact police with any statements or dash cam footage of the vehicle, at 250 754 2345, quoting file number 2022-23707.
