Nutritional coupon program expands at Nanaimo farmers markets
NANAIMO — A vital program connecting low-income families and individuals with fresh, local food is growing.
Funded by the provincial government, through the BC Farmers’ Markets organization, coupons are given to families who apply for them to purchase fresh fruit, vegetables, meats, fish and other non-processed goods at a participating market.
Kate Poirier, executive director for the Cedar Farmers Market Agriculture Society, told NanaimoNewsNOW the coupons are essential in getting people what they need for themselves and their family.
“The coupons that participants receive, they work just like gift certificates. They can only be used for fresh goods, nothing processed, but they can come and shop from any of the farmers, buy anything they like week by week for their families.”
