BC Ferries boosts surcharge in response to rising fuel costs
NANAIMO — Sailing with BC Ferries is getting more expensive as increased fuel prices impact the company.
A fuel surcharge by the company of 2.5 per cent took effect on Wednesday, June 1, adding 45 cents to an adult ticket and $2 for a vehicle and driver traveling on major routes between Vancouver island and the Lower Mainland.
The added surcharge sees 25 cents added to an adult fare and $1.05 extra for a vehicle and driver on a number of inter-island routes.
BC Ferries noted in a news release it uses a fuel rebate/surcharge mechanism to manage volatility in the price of fuel. When prices are lower, BC Ferries passes reduced prices onto customers.
