Taps turned on at Parksville splash park

PARKSVILLE — Despite record cold temperatures which show little sign of abating, the water is again flowing at a summer favourite.

The splash park at Parksville Community Park opens Sunday, May 15 for the year, next to the expanded playground and popular boardwalk.

It’s the first major park of its kind to open for the summer season.

“To help conserve water over the spring and summer, the park is equipped with activation buttons in various places so the water cycle only runs if the park is in use,” a post from the City of Parksville on Facebook noted. “Now let’s hope for some sun!”

Unseasonably cold temperatures, upwards of five or six degrees colder than normal have persisted through late April and early May.

The recording station at Nanaimo Airport posted a maximum temperature of 15.3 degrees so far in May with the historical average temperature around 17 degrees.

A new part of the Lions Ventureland playground opened at the end of January, dubbed Harbour Town. The section includes six slides, a pirate ship, spinner and climbing structures.

City of Nanaimo has not announced an opening date for their water parks, however staff tell NanaimoNewsNOW they are aiming for a date ahead of the upcoming May long weekend.
