Police incident delays start of BMO Vancouver Marathon by more than one hour

VANCOUVER — Runners in the BMO Vancouver Marathon were on their marks for longer than expected when a police incident delayed the start of the race. 

Vancouver Police thanked runners for their patience as they responded to the incident near the marathon route, which closed large sections of the downtown core.

Police have not shared further information about the nature of the incident, saying only that it has been resolved.

The starting pistol was fired more than one hour after the scheduled 7 a.m. start time. 

Sunday’s race marked the 50th anniversary of the event and a return to in-person racing after it was cancelled in 2020 and went virtual in 2021 due to COVID-19.

Marathon organizers warned that the reopening of traffic at the end of the race could also be delayed by the early police incident.
