Pedestrian knocked out by thrown egg in north Nanaimo

NANAIMO — A bystander minding his own business was hit in the head by an egg hurled from a moving vehicle, knocking the victim out unconscious.

Nanaimo RCMP say the incident occurred on Feb. 25 at about 10:45 p.m. as the victim stood on Uplands Dr. near Oliver Rd. with two friends when the egg was thrown from the side window of a passing small dark coloured vehicle, a police said.

The victim was knocked out once he was hit by the egg, RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said.

“He remembers waking up in the ambulance, he has no memory of the incident whatsoever,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

He said an off-duty nurse saw the downed man and provided first aid, while paramedics attended and took the 37-year-old victim to Nanaimo Hospital.

The victim has since had difficulty with thought processing weeks following the incident, O’Brien noted.

He said people might be surprized to know eggs can cause bodily injuries to people, but said it’s entirely plausible.

“If the tip of the egg actually struck the head, that’s a solid object. You can apply a lot of pressure on the two tips of the egg. If it hit him flush it probably would have cracked quite easily and not caused any damage.”

He theorized teenagers are responsible given the juvenile nature of the unprovoked attack, adding it’s likely other eggs were thrown from the vehicle during the night in question.

O’Brien said investigators believe the person who threw the egg likely didn’t intend to cause an injury and may not realize what occurred.

“We could go as far as assault with a weapon, but right now our focus is on who is responsible for it and why it happened.”
