NANAIMO — Residents in southern portions of the city can expect a little extra noise over the weekend.

The Department of National Defence and the Royal Canadian Navy will be conducting small arms training at the Nanaimo Range on Saturday, March 12 from around 8 a.m. until late in the evening.

Maj. Chris Scott, commanding officer of B-Company of Canadian Scottish Regiment in Nanaimo said around 50 officers will partake in the drills.

“We’ll begin a series of rifle practices, that’s the C-7 service rifle. It will go from first thing Saturday morning until about 10 p.m. Saturday night. Folks that live in the area will be able to hear the routine crackling of the .556 calibre ammunition being fired at targets at the range.”

The range is located west of Chase River and Hwy. 19, off Nanaimo Lakes Rd.

Training sessions occur a few times a year with one regularly held in early March.

The public are prohibited from entering the range at any time, especially during scheduled training sessions.

“For folks who are aware of the range, its location and the area that surrounds the range, we just remind folks for their own safety to respect the signage…to stay out of the range danger area.”
