NANAIMO — Local Mounties continue to piece together the events of a murder in the city’s north end.

One man was found dead, with another inside the Buzz Coffee House on Rutherford Rd., near the Island Hwy. around 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12. The second person was arrested and remains in police custody.

Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW officers have spent the last 24 hours combing the scene conducting a forensic investigation.

“The investigation is moving ahead, they expect to be in a position maybe tomorrow (Monday, Feb. 13) where charges may be laid,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Officers have also not released the name of either the victim or suspect.

O’Brien said investigators have established no clear link between the two people involved.

‘”This was a tragic outcome but it was entirely random and there was no connection whatsoever between the deceased and the person arrested at the scene.”

Mounties originally attended Buzz Coffee House around 9 a.m. on Saturday for a check well being call.

Officers remained on scene through Sunday, Feb. 13 with a BC Coroners Service vehicle seen parked outside through the morning.

O’Brien said two additional search warrants had been carried out in relation to the murder.
