Public hearing dates rescheduled for high profile Nanaimo developments

NANAIMO —Following delays caused by the pandemic, people will have an opportunity to formally offer their opinions on two substantial development proposals at opposite ends of Nanaimo.

The City established Thursday, Feb. 17 for councillors to hear the public’s view on the Sandstone development in south Nanaimo.

A week later on Feb. 24, the Green Thumb Garden Centre redevelopment will be dissected by the public.

Hearings on both fronts didn’t proceed this month due to concerns regarding the Omicron variant, which also pushed City council and committee meetings online.

The City anticipates both hearings will allow the public to speak in person before Council at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.

Both projects could significantly alter the course of north and south Nanaimo respectively in the coming decades.

The Green Thumb Garden Centre proposal aims to transform a nursery into 2,500 residential units, including several residential towers over the permitted six-storey limit.

At the other end of Nanaimo, an expansive 2,200 residential unit with commercial and industrial components are envisioned.

The frameworks for both projects require two additional endorsements from council.
