NANAIMO — Public opinion will help shape an ambitious affordable housing community to be located in a central part of Harewood.

Three neighouring properties are poised for redevelopment on Fifth St: the vacated Sanala townhouse complex, a sports field and the old Harewood School site.

“At this stage, we are focused on gathering community feedback which will support development of draft site concepts. Once completed, we will bring those designs back to the community in spring/summer 2022 with the result being a final, agreed-upon land use concept,” A BC Housing statement to NanaimoNewsNOW read.

The site will house a minimum of 40 affordable housing units, surrounded by other culturally responsive services and amenities.

“The project objectives are to realize the full potential of the land by integrating housing, education, recreation and accessible services in the area.”

The project, known as Te’tuxwtun, the traditional name of Mount Benson, will see three online community circle conversations take place: on Jan. 15, Jan. 20 and Jan. 23.

Registration is required at: letstalkhousingbc.ca/nanaimo-tetuxwtun.

An online survey is running between Jan. 3 and Jan. 28 at: Tetuxwtun Community Engagement (ethelo.net.

One of the project priorities beyond affordable rental housing includes a new location for the school district’s Learning Alternatives Program.

Funding for the initiative was announced in 2020, which is a partnership between BC Housing, Snuneymuxw First Nation, the City of Nanaimo and Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools.

“The time to start construction will depend on the length of time required to complete rezoning and also to obtain other necessary permits,” BC Housing stated.
