Additional Nanaimo-Vancouver ferry cancellations resulting from wind warnings

Jan 3, 2022 | 5:12 AM

NANAIMO — More crossings between Nanaimo and the Lower Mainland are being cancelled.

BC Ferries announced the 5:15 a.m. departure from Tsawwassen and the corresponding 7:45 a.m. sailing from Duke Point were cancelled, due to high winds forecast in the Strait of Georgia.

Environment Canada has a gale warning in effect for Monday, Jan. 3, with the forecast calling for southeast winds gusting to 40 knots, or 75 kilometres per hour.

The winds are expected to remain strong through until early Monday evening, before re-strengthening into Tuesday, Jan. 4.

Forecasters are expecting the main brunt of the wind storm to occur towards the south Island, with an earlier wind warning in effect for central and northern Vancouver Island ended early Monday morning.

It remained in effect for the Lower Mainland and southern Gulf Islands.

The early cancellation comes on the heels of nearly the entire day’s schedule between Tsawwassen and Duke Point on Sunday, Jan. 2 being cancelled due to the winds.

Late afternoon and evening crossings between Horseshoe Bay and Departure Bay were also suspended.

Travellers are encouraged to visit the BC Ferries website for the latest sailing cancellations and service notices.
