NANAIMO — A further 59 new cases of COVID-19 were reported by Island Health on Wednesday, but the number of active cases remained steady.

Of the new cases, 30 came from the central Island region with 21 in the south and the remaining eight in the north.

Since the start of the pandemic, 45 per cent of all cases have come from the central region, encompassing communities like Nanaimo, Parksville, Qualicum, Port Alberni and Tofino/Ucluelet.

Recent additions in the area are being partially driven by an outbreak declared at the Tofino General Hospital, where four patients have tested positive in the inpatient unit.

Active cases remained unchanged at 550, including 242 on the central Island.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of daily COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

The BC Centre for Disease Control shows 44 people admitted to hospital on Vancouver Island for COVID-19, including 28 receiving intensive care.

Data from the province showed another 605 new cases added to B.C.’s tally, now at 195,186 cases since the start of the pandemic.

Active cases changed marginally, down to 5,172 including 374 people in hospital, 153 of whom are receiving intensive care.

A further four people died as a result of COVID-19 complications, including one within Island Health. To date, 78 people from the health authority have passed away from causes linked to the pandemic, among 2,033 province-wide.

Public health reported Wednesday 82.7 per cent of people have received their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, making 3.84 million people fully vaccinated.

Data from both the greater Nanaimo and Oceanside regions show 82 per cent of people have received their second dose, the highest rate on Vancouver Island north of the Malahat.
