Island Health records sharp drop in active COVID-19 cases

NANAIMO — The number of active COVID-19 cases in Island Health has dropped 17 per cent.

Numbers reported by the health authority on Friday, Oct. 8 show 510 active cases across the north, central and southern regions, down from 616 on Thursday.

The southern Island area accounted for most of the reductions with 66, weeks following a surge in cases. The central Island has 213 active, down 35 from the day prior. Fifty-three remain active in the north with 244 to the south.

In total, 76 new cases were reported Friday, split mainly between the central and southern regions.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of daily COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

The BC Centre for Disease Control reports 39 patients admitted to Island hospitals for COVID-19 symptoms, including 25 receiving intensive care.

Public health recorded an additional 743 cases across B.C. on Friday, above the rolling seven day average of 667.

Active cases again only fluctuated the minimal amount, rising 40 to 5,969. The number of people considered active has floated around 6,000 over the last week.

The total number of people in hospital across B.C. dropped to 360, however 137 of those patients are in ICU which is an increase of five over Thursday’s report from the BC CDC.

An additional five deaths linked to the pandemic were also reported, although none were in the Island Health authority. To date, 2,001 people have died as a result of COVID-19.
