NANAIMO — Candidates vying to be the next Member of Parliament for the Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding will have their opportunity to impress voters.

A virtual all-candidates forum hosted by the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce taking place Wednesday, Sept. 15 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Vancouver Island conference Centre will be streamed online.

Chamber president Kim Smythe said all five candidates in the riding confirmed their participation, planned to involve 13 questions with an opportunity for candidates to make rebuttals.

Smythe said questions encompassing interests of the event’s sponsors and the public will be asked, including housing affordability, labour shortages, healthcare, climate change and child care.

Members of the public hoping to have their question asked can send it to: admin@nanaimochamber.bc.ca.

“We’ve received several dozen already, we have a pretty good idea of what matters here,” Smythe said.

No members of the public will be allowed inside the Shaw Auditorium with the exception of a maximum of four pre-registered supporters for each candidate and members of the media.

Smythe said an anticipated tight vote to determine Nanaimo-Ladysmith’s next MP is generating an intriguing campaign locally.

“We’ve seen the Green’s upset the long-held NDP and the NDP upset the previously long-held Conservatives. I think we have a race on our hands,” Smythe said.

The Sept. 15 forum will also be taped on Shaw TV and shown numerous times prior to general election day on Sept. 20.

The Nanaimo-Ladysmith Candidates are:

– Lisa Marie Barron, New Democratic Party.
– Michelle Corfied, Liberal Party of Canada.
– Tamara Kronis, Conservative Party of Canada.
– Paul Manly, (incumbent) Green Party of Canada.
– Stephen Welton, People’s Party of Canada.
