NDP kickoff efforts to win back Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding

LADYSMITH — The Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding has been visited by the leader of a federal party for the first time this election campaign.

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh hosted a meet-and-greet with several hundred supporters at Transfer Beach in Ladysmith on Monday, Aug. 30.

He flew in from Ottawa, where he’d made a campaign promise about closing tax loopholes for the wealthy. No announcements were made during his visit to Ladysmith.

Local candidate Lisa Marie Barron, a SD68 school board trustee, told NanaimoNewsNOW she’s heard on the doorstep people are “anxious and excited” for change at the local and federal level.

“Unfortunately right now we have an MP who doesn’t have official party status. So what happens is this riding does not end up with the representation it needs and deserves.”

The Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding was a longtime NDP stronghold which went to the Green Party in a 2019 byelection and retained later that year in the federal election.

Barron said she’s excited to be the face of the NDP in the push to reclaim the riding.

She’s facing off against a full slate of opponents from every party.
