Province expands park land on Valdez Island

NANAIMO — A beloved cove on Valdez Island is expanding as official park land.

BC Parks purchased two hectares of land around Wakes Cove Marine Park for $535,000.

The cove at the north end of the island “provides sheltered anchorage and has long been a desirable addition to the park,” the province said.

This was one of the three land purchases on Vancouver Island, including in Gowland Tod Park north of Victoria and 39 hectares along with Cowichan River.

Kelly Green, parliamentary secretary for the environment, said land acquisitions are a key way to protect green space in the province.

“Increasingly, our parks offer us the opportunity to appreciate the importance of Indigenous knowledge and teachings to better understand the changes happening to the land.”

More than 229 hectares of land were purchased by the province valued at nearly $2.5 million.
