KAMLOOPS ā€“ The McKay Creek wildfire is continuing to burn out of control north of Pavillion. The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) estimates the fire is now 22,000 hectares.

The fire grew aggressively yesterday (June 30), jumping across the Fraser River and is now burning in isolated areas on the eastern edge of the river.

The Thompson Nicola Regional District issued Evacuation Alerts to several properties. The properties are:

  • 9320 Empire Valley Big Bar Rd;
  • 7633 to 8410 Watson Bar Rd;
  • 9180 West Pavilion Rd;
  • any other properties that lie within the boundaries of the map below.

The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District has issued an Evacuation Order earlier for the West Pavilion road from the 14 km mark to the 41 km mark in Electoral Area B.

The BCWS says the aggressive fire behaviour combined with windy conditions have limited firefighters ability to make progress on the fire.

3 Unit crews, an Incident Management Team and a Structure Protection Unit including associated personnel are working the fire with the assistance of 4 helicopters and 6 pieces of heavy equipment.

At this point, the BCWS says its primary objective is to assess and deploy structure protection units where applicable and protect valuable assets in the area of the fire.

The fire is visible in the sky to the north of Lillooet and in the western sky of Clinton.
