NANAIMO — A relatively quiet weekend in the fight against COVID-19 as the third wave of the pandemic eases.

A joint statement from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix confirmed 974 new COVID-19 cases found over the weekend.

There were 1,360 new cases in the previous weekend reporting period.

The lowest day was May 24 with 293 new cases.

Island Health did not update its own dashboard on Monday, May 24. The joint statement from the province reported 25 new cases for the health authority over the three reporting periods.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

It’s expected Island Health will provide a long-weekend update after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25.

From May 21 to May 24, 12 more people passed away. The previous weekend saw 14 fatalities.

There are currently 3,953 active cases confirmed in the province.

Of those cases, 292 are currently hospitalized with 96 receiving intensive care.

An overage of roughly 47,000 people received a vaccine dose each day of the weekend reporting period, which is the highest weekend average so far since vaccines became available.
