NANAIMO — Dancing in the streets has led to a brand new beat for two youthful superstars.

The dance duo Funkanometry, who reached the international stage in the televised show “World of Dance,” have reached a new audience through TikTok. Their recent videos shot in downtown Nanaimo have amassed close to five million views in only a few weeks.

Jacksun Fryer, the younger of the two, said they’ve used the app for roughly one year but only recent have their slick dance moves caught the attention of a wider group.

“I think it’s coming from us doing a lot of old-school songs and hitting a lot of funk. It seems to bring out a lot of positivity a lot of people like and will share.”

Fryer said it’s as close as they can get to the thrill of being on stage.

“We get the same audience energy back through the comments. It’s great seeing the positivity coming from them, just like we were performing on stage.”

Carlow Rush, the taller of the two, said it’s been interesting to film in increasingly busy areas of town.

“Sometimes people walk right through and don’t care. But sometimes they’re great. People were so patient at the waterfront video. They were cheering us on, people were coming around dancing and giving us props. The vibe overall down there was amazing.”

Rush said many local businesses have reached out to offer themselves as filming locations.

With the promise of live performances on the horizon, Rush said they’ll continue filming TikToks for as long as they can and work to further engage with their audience in the Nanaimo area and abroad.
