COVID-19 outbreak over in rehab unit at Nanaimo hospital

Apr 28, 2021 | 11:20 AM

NANAIMO — A COVID-19 outbreak at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital is over.

Island Health confirmed no further evidence of the coronavirus was detected inside the high intensity rehab unit at the hospital.

An outbreak was declared April 14 after five patients inside the unit tested positive for COVID-19.

Another patient and one staff member were also identified during follow-up rounds of testing.

Beginning immediately, the rehab unit has resumed accepting new admissions and transfers. Staff movement in and out of the rehab unit was also restricted during the outbreak.

It’s the end of the third outbreak for NRGH during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Similar situations occurred in November 2020 where five staff members in the transitional care unit contracted the virus.

The second began in late January 2021 with two staff members and one patient on the fourth floor of the east wing of the hospital testing positive.

In all three cases, no transmission of the virus occurred outside of the affected units once an outbreak was declared.

All other areas of the hospital, including the emergency room, remained at full operation throughout each outbreak.
