COVID-19 outbreak within NRGH unit grows, first staff member infected

NANAIMO — A staff member in a NRGH unit has contracted COVID-19 as the outbreak spreads.

Island Health on Wednesday, April 21 confirmed a staff member and additional patient in the High Intensity Rehab Unit tested positive for the virus.

There are currently six patients and one staff member who’ve tested positive. The outbreak remains contained to the unit.

All other COVID-19 tests received to date have come back negative.

Across all of Island Health, the number of COVID-19 cases dropped by roughly 200 in less than two weeks.

Island Health data showed 307 active cases across the health authority, down from 508 on April 9.

There are currently 84 active cases in central Vancouver Island, down 10 from the day before.

Nine new cases were found in the area out of the 35 announced for Island Health on Wednesday.

South Vancouver Island has roughly two-thirds of Island Health’s cases.

The number of new and active cases continued their downward trend across B.C. A joint statement from the province announced 862 new cases with 8,906 currently active.

The number of hospitalizations and people in ICU, which lag behind new cases, continued to rise. There’s currently 483 people in hospital with 164 of them receiving intensive care.

Seven new fatalities were reported.
