Signature Dish: Smokin’ George’s Porkinator Sandwich

NANAIMO — Some people try to share the Smokin’ George’s Porkinator but most can’t.

“Most people just down it,” restaurant owner George Kulai said. “They get their teeth into it and they just go.”

The sandwich always has homemade pulled pork and bacon with a scintillating sauce and mayonnaise. Meats such as pork loin or Black Forest Ham are switched out regularly at Kulai’s whim but it’s never anything less than delicious.

Kulai says every element they bring to their food is put together in the Porkinator.

“It gives so many different elements our customers love. We physically smoke oil to make the smoke oil mayonnaise that goes into it. We brine the pork loin for four or five days in our own brine and then we smoke it. The crispy onions are soaked in milk for 24 hours and then we gently fry them with a little bit of our rub and flour. It makes for one dynamite sandwich.”

The Porkinator is a hefty sandwich but easily grasped and devoured. Be sure to stock up on napkins before you dive in.

“There’s a lot of meat in there,” Kulai said. “The sandwich is extraordinarily rich.”

Though everything on the Porkinator could be bought at a store, Kulai said making everything themselves adds an extra sweetness to the sandwich customers can sense.

“Yeah it’s a lot of work but our customers tell us it’s worth it,” Kulai said.

The dedication to fresh ingredients and sizzling textures has paid off for Kulai and his staff. Smokin’ George’s was named a Travellers’ Choice restaurant by Tripadvisor in 2020.

The Smokin’ George’s BBQ sauce and BBQ rub can be bought at local markets throughout Nanaimo to add some spice to your own barbeque adventures.

Smokin’ George’s has new hours. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
