B.C. records more than 2,000 new COVID-19 cases in two days

NANAIMO – The days leading up to Easter weren’t kind for B.C. public health.

A joint statement from the province announced 2,090 new cases from April 1 to April 3, averaging slightly over 1,000 cases each day.

This is in line with the dramatic increases seen in the last week.

Roughly half of the cases were in the Fraser Health region, with Vancouver Coastal Health lagging by only a few hundred cases.

Island Health saw 147 new cases in the time period, according to the joint statement. The Interior Health region saw roughly the same amount, which is a change from much of the pandemic when Island Health was behind Interior Health for new cases.

There is a disparity between cases confirmed by Island Health and the province due to timing.

NanaimoNewsNOW presents the Island Health numbers, but they weren’t available on Saturday.

It’s unknown how many active cases are in Island Health. There were 392 as of Thursday, April 1.

Currently, those 72 and over and Indigenous people over 18 can make their appointments to receive the vaccine.

The AstraZeneca vaccine is being expanded to more B.C. communities, including Nanaimo and Parksville, in partnership with the BC Pharmacy Association.
