Further COVID-19 exposure events confirmed for Wellington secondary

NANAIMO — A local secondary school has confirmed additional COVID-19 exposure events.

The events stem from a separate case in the Wellington secondary school community, but occurred on the same days, Monday March 29 and Tuesday March 30, of previously confirmed exposure events at the school.

Island Health completed contact tracing Thursday evening, with all directly affected people told to isolate.

Wellington secondary is just one of two schools listed on Island Health’s exposure event list and the only one on the central Island.

The Vancouver Island COVID Rapid Response team, headed by SD68, previously warned of the potential for a significant number of exposure events in the coming weeks following the recent two week spring break.

In early March, the SD68 board expressed similar concerns during a debate on bolstering the provincial mask mandate, which at the time did not cover students in the district below grade eight.

The province has since updated those rules to include all students in grades four and up.
